Small things create stronger impact than big things

A short story on employees motivation and keeping their interest alive at work.

I was sitting in the desperate mood. My company employees' turnover rate was very high. Employees hardly reach 2 years and then switch. I was very much worried with this situation.

It was 10pm, office lights were dim, I was just starring www.google.com webpage at my laptop, thinking google might help me get rid of it. Meanwhile, my office boy entered the room and asked for coffee. That was my 6th mug of coffee since morning.

"Yeah, bring coffee".
"Ok, sir", my tea boy replied and left the room.
I placed my cell phone on my desk, loosen my neck tie and started looking out of the window. How beautiful are these street lights!

After a couple of minutes, my mobie phone rang, I looked at its screen, it was my old buddy Omer's call, who is now a well reputed trainer.

"Hello", I said in a low tone.
"Hey, buddy! How are you?"
"M fine", thank you! I replied. He questioned,
"Are you sleeping"? I negated,
"No, just sitting in the office, waiting for coffee and nothing". He was astonished and said,
"Its 10pm, and you are still in office. Why?" I took a deep breath and replied,
"Oh Yes, Omer. My mind is occupied, can I call you tomorrow?" He replied,
"You may, but if you share your problem, may be I can help you".
"Well, My employees are not happy to work here", I told him in an irritating sound
"So, this is the problem. Its not the big deal. Just give them incentives and they will not go anywhere", he added.
"I have done it all. I have given them incentives, good salaries, appreciation letters but all in vain", I answered in a jiffy.
"Invest in their families", he replied back.
"What"??? I was amazed by Omer's reply. He then continued,
"If you want your employees to become more productive then invest in their hobbies, families, and their personal interests". I questioned immediately,
"How will it be helpful?"
"We all earn for our families and if we cannot find time to spend with them, make them enjoy life, then everything is useless. These small things play big role. Let me explain through examples". He said confidently.
"Yeah, sure", I smiled.
"Sometimes, appreciation letters don't work but if you give your employee 1 week off, he will become more happy. Similarly, if you send gifts to your employees' families they will feel more comfortable at work. Few days back, I gave my worker brand new Saree (Indian traditional dress) and asked him to gift her wife on their wedding anniversary. As a result his family got motivated. It was more than appreciation letter, regular pay voucher or any other materialistic reward".
"That's strange"! i interrupted.
"You have to do same thing. If any of your employee is gym rat, then buy him free gym membership for 6 months. Definitely he will like this reward more than annual appraisal. And if someone like to read books, or like gardening, then invest in their hobbies. Believe me, your employees and their families will get emotionally attached with your company. And they will never leave".

"Nice, I like your all suggestions. One of my best worker likes to travel, so I should immediately give him a few days off and ask him to enjoy travelling thrills."

"Yes, exactly. You will see, he will be much happier and motivated to work for you", he said.
"Thanks, Omer" It was great relief for me". I sighed again but hopefully.

Next day, I asked my HR Manager to share all my employees' employment forms. I started noticing everyone's' interest from those forms and started making a list.

Sometimes, small things create stronger impact than big things.

Every thing is created TWICE: Self Development

"Ali, come to my office"
As soon as Ali heard this voice, his forehead started sweating, he became confused and under pressure.
"What went wrong? What went wrong?", Ali was asking himself
"Everything was good, all deals were closed in time, profit is high, I reached office in time, yesterday i did late sitting...What went wrong? what went wrong?"Ali was talking to himself. His body language was at worst.

I was observing this all, and was thinking how to help him.
Ali went into boss' room and came out within in 10 minutes shaking his head and saying "No No" in low tone. I wanted to ask him about this short meeting, but couldn't.

At lunch break, I asked Ali
"What happened at boss room"
It was just simple question, but followed by so much angry reply.
"I don't want to work here. This organization never respected good performers, that is why people leave them in just 2 years. I am resigning tomorrow morning. I'll put resignation on one day notice. I don't care about my experience letter and final settlement. He is such a bul..."
I interrupted, "Hey, hey man, hold one. Apply breaks man."
"I don't know, why boss is always angry and unsatisfied with me and happy with others"
"Because you allow him to do so" I replied softly.
"Me, what is this non-sense?"
"Yes, you"
"How?"
"Your pre-occupied mindset allow him to do so"
"Now what is this pre-occupied mind?"
"Look Ali, listen to me carefully. Everything is created twice, once in our mind and then into reality. Our feelings are released from our body in form of energy. These feelings also control our body language. When negative thoughts are generated, they release negative feelings and release negative energy. This energy is attracted by other persons' negative energy. As a result you create such situation that never goes into your favor."
"So, as per your recommendation, I must start laughing when boss calls me in his room" He said in taunting tone.
"Yes" I replied and smiled.
"Everything is in our control. We are master of our soul and leader of our destiny. If you start thinking and generating positive vibes (feelings / energy), they will be attracted by other person and lead to good situation. Next time try it." I said and went to my workstation.

Next day, same situation. Me and Ali were engaged in deep discussion. Suddenly we heard loud voice,
"Ali, come to my office"
Ali smiled and replied in same louder tone "Yes sir, m here". I was shocked.
Ali went into boss room, and came back after an hour.
"What happened inside?"
"We had cup of coffee, and discussed many new ideas", He tapped my shoulder and walked away.
After a while i heard his voice "Thanks buddy for valuable advice"

Walking with Giants: Self-Devlopment

It was quite rough day. Nothing went in my favor. I was drowning in negative thoughts. Every single moment was pushing me in deep regrets full of failures and disappointments. I was hating myself...
Cold drizzling winters, empty dark streets and I was alone walking on road side at mid night. Lost in worries, moving slowly towards River Bridge. When I reached bridge, my mind started thinking to jump and finish once for all. I was preparing, ready to jump...

"Are you thinking to jump, young man?” I heard voice of an old man just standing behind me.
"Who me? no, no no..."
"I was just looking, how deep river is?" I replied cautiously
"Ha Ha Ha..." old man laughed.
"Hey anything funny"
"No young man, nothing funny. You are worst at lying"
I felt little dis-graced.
"How do you know, that I am lying?"
"Young man, come here, walk with me" old man hold my hand and started walking towards end of bridge.
"When I was at your age, I also had same thoughts, but one day my father advised me get rid of such foolish thoughts and build friendship with giants".
"Friendship with giants". "What does this mean?"
"Patience young man" old man took deep breath and continued "young man, walk with giants, talk with them, share your feelings with them and they will guide you".
In meanwhile we reached end of bridge. Old man was breathing hard. We sat on nearby bench and then old man continued...
"Walking with giant means, walk with your inspirations. Walk with those people whose life inspired you most and who made their names in history."
"But, how can I do that? They all are dead" I felt bit confused.
Old man smiled.
"Dear, their bodies are dead and buried but they are still alive in our minds. Just close your eyes for moment and start thinking of them, whom you admire the most. Take deep breath and ask solutions of your problem. They will reply in their own way and guide you out of this difficult situation". "Walking with giants is all about spending time with history's great people. Allow them to become your mentor in your mind and control your acts. You can discuss your matters with Quaid-e-Azam, he will guide you in his way or you can get intellectual thoughts by thinking of Allama Iqbal. If you want inner peace, just spend time with Baba Bhulle Shah or any other sufi who you admire".
"Put these giants in your current situation and ask them how will they react in this situation? They will definitely reply". "All you need is concentration"
I closed my eyes, took deep breath and engaged myself in deep discussion with giants. Found many possible solutions and valuable suggestions. All came from my own mind, but it seemed someone else was controlling my mind.
When i opened my eyes, old man was gone. I felt quite light, smiled and started walking towards home, obviously with GIANTS...

Bodybuilding as Leadership Sports

I have been engaged in bodybuilding sports since 2005. I used to follow same gym routine and never tried anything new for 9 years. In 2014 i decided to explore new dimensions, and found that i was moving in wrong direction. For 9 years i followed traditional and outdated methods. This sport is not just about weight training, mass building or make yourself physically strong. It is much more than that.

This blog is about one of my findings i.e., "Bodybuilding is Leadership Sports". I compared leadership traits with bodybuilding and below are my finding,

1. Both have vision
Bodybuilding without vision is useless. It is long term goal. Every day i used to see Arnold pics and wish to be like him. Similarly Leadership without vision is not leadership.

2. Both have short term goals / missions
Mass gaining is not easy and one cannot achieve in days or months. Bodybuilders have to set short term goals just like leaders. They keep on achieving their goals and slowly moving towards their vision.

3. Both have schedules
Just like leaders, bodybuilders set their workout routine. And they strictly follow their workout schedule to achieve their vision or final outcome.

4. Both track progress
If bodybuilder is not tracking his progress, then he will eventually lost his position and road to vision. I was used to take all body measurements on weekly basis, and daily pose in front of mirror to see improvement in my body shape.

5. Admire others
Bodybuilders admire others' perfection just like leaders admire good work of others'.

6. Always willing to help
It is great to see that in gym, whenever i needed help, other bodybuilders instantly jumped to help me in lifting heavy weights and support me to achieve my goals. Just like leaders, they are always willing to help other and help them to move ahead in right direction.

7. Never hesitate to ask for help
I have never seen any bodybuilder who hesitated for asking help in lifting heavy weights. When i used to lift heavy, i myself seek help from others.

8. Set clear objectives and targets
Every bodybuilder set very clear objectives and targets. If any one want to become Arnold he will follow him, and if some one want to become Jay, he will definitely follow him and his workout. Both, bodybuilders and leaders always have focused approach.

 9. Confidence level
Both are always confident of their achievements and emotionally strong.

In upcoming blogs I will share my more findings about bodybuilding sport and how is it related to other things?
